BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY

The health-care industry in Canada and around the world is growing rapidly with the use of sophisticated electronic, computer-controlled and networked equipment that is now the norm. With the skills required to install, test, maintain and manage the life cycle of critical medical equipment, biomedical engineering technologists are an essential part of an allied health-care team.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The health-care industry in Canada and around the world is growing exponentially. The use of sophisticated electronic, computer-controlled and networked equipment has created a demand for specialized, well trained graduates with a focus on the biomedical applications of electronic engineering technology.

This program will prepare you to meet the growing demand for the installation, testing, calibration, preventative maintenance, sales and management of electronic and computer-controlled medical equipment and systems as an integral part of the health-care team. You will gain valuable hands-on experience in the methods and instrumentation used in health care.

Durham College’s Biomedical Engineering Technology lab is fully equipped including:

  • Anesthesia equipment
  • Bedside and central monitoring
  • Dialysis machines
  • Infusion pumps
  • Patient monitor information and database systems
  • Physiological measurement devices

You will work with a variety of biomedical patient simulators and test and measurement devices in addition to the technologies found in our fully equipped electronics repair department.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or Mature Student Status
  • Grade 12 English (C or U)
  • Grade 12 Mathematics for College Technology (MCT4C) (alternate available)
  • Grade 11 biology (C, M or U)
  • Physics and chemistry (C, M or U) (recommended)

FIELD PLACEMENT

Your learning experience will be complemented by a field placement at the end of your third year, which will enable you to utilize your newly acquired skills and gain valuable industry-related experience. Each student will have slightly different experiences working with medical devices and health-care professionals.

Students applying to this program may be eligible to apply for the W. Garfield Weston Foundation Award. Qualified recipients of the award will receive $5,000 per year, for up to two years, including $1,500 for tuition and $3,500 for other expenses such as travel, food, books, tools and supplies.
